I just finished reading the NY Times article, Weighed Down by All the Memories. I too suffer from this problem, as many of us do. It's very hard for me to let go of anything associated with fond memories. I still have the front of an old trunk my parents used to pack things for our annual trip to Grandma's in Oklahoma. That's all that's left of it after a fire in 1990. It sits in my garden. Why don't I just throw it away? I've tried several times. That's why it's in my garden. That's as far as I have gotten. One day I will throw it out. I thought of that while reading the Times article. I rationalized that the writer didn't have to throw out her grandpa's suitcase. It could have been used to organize the writer's photos or something else. :).
One thing I have found is that if there is something that is so loved that it would be like throwing out grandpa himself, then ease it out, rather that ripping it out. But I know the writer was right. That's why my house is still in the shape it's in. I haven't got that far yet. I hope the next time I comment I can say that I have made some real progress.
