HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Throw out 50 things.

Motivational speaker and life coach Gail Blanke threw out the challenge to a sold-out crowd at Merrimack Hall on Thursday night.

It sounds so simple until you go home and try it.

But by using humor and inspirational stories of those who have succeeded, Blanke was convincing in her argument that women should simplify their lives of "mental and emotional clutter."

The goal, she said, "is to be free to move forward with energy, optimism and a bold spirit." Who wouldn't want to do that?

Blanke's message is heavy on go-girl mottos like "you can't grow if you don't let go," but she does deliver plenty of specifics on changing your life.

Cluttered junk drawer? Clean it out. Regrets or grudges? Forget 'em. Need to be right? Leave it behind. Too many things with sentimental significance? "The memories are not in the stuff - they're in your heart," she said.

Blanke offered her own step system to "owning your own power." She covers much of the same ground in her newest book, "Throw Out 50 Things."

Step one: have a vision. Imagine what you'd want your life to be. The rest:

Let go. That includes negative assumptions, fear of failing and doubts.

Make a list of inspiring moments, when you rose to meet a challenge. "The form a pattern of courage."

Adopt an entrepreneurial spirit. Be a risk-taker. Be willing to change.

Develop your own personal brand. Blanke said her mother told her the only thing everyone likes is water. So decide if you'll be lemonade, hot chocolate or champagne. Choose your image.
Learn to distinguish between fact and interpretation.

And last, identify your "power song." Whether it's "Proud to be an American" (which one man in the audience sang) or Elton John's "The B--ch is Back," let it be your inspiration.

No doubt many women left the program humming their power songs and vowing to toss their emotional junk - not to mention 50 actual things.

The program was sponsored by Huntsville Hospital's Laugh and Learn network.
